Bed runners made from handwoven silks and embroidered cottons can be laid across the bed for a beautiful decorative effect. Some can also be used across the back of a sofa, or even as wallhangings. They are mostly from India or Laos.
India has an wonderful variety of handloom textiles, the skill and imagination of the weavers seems to show no limit; different styles are often characteristic of different regions, castes and tribes. We find the silk weavings irresistible.
In Laos we spent several days with the weavers of Luang Prabhang. Women usually weave at home on looms set up in the garden. Often the silk is handspun and the vegetable dyes are made from in the village. Some of these weavings are called Pha Tung, prayer flags, woven for the Buddhist New Year celebrations.
